The Tree: Honoring a Once-in-a-Lifetime Masterpiece

The Tree - quilted mahogany dressing table.

There are rare materials in this world, and then there are those that carry a story, a history, and a presence that transcends their physical form. The extraordinary quilted Honduran mahogany known as “The Tree” is one such material.

Now valued at $2,000 or more per board foot, this wood has effectively disappeared from the market. Of the original 12,000 board feet, the well has run dry. No boards of any meaningful size remain available. Sourced from a 500-year-old tree in the Chiquibul jungle, its rarity and beauty have made it legendary – sought after for its remarkable figure and depth, often spoken of with the same reverence as a lost treasure.

Quilted Honduran mahogany known as “The Tree”

A Material Worthy of its Highest Expression

When I had the opportunity to work with this wood, I approached it not simply as material – but as something to be honored. From it, I created an exquisite dressing table and stool, a bespoke piece designed to showcase the full character and movement of this remarkable mahogany. The set contains approximately 14 board feet and required five weeks of careful, traditional craftsmanship to complete.

Because this was never meant to be just another object. It was meant to be a lasting expression of the tree itself.

When Value is Misunderstood

In recent months, I’ve received inquiries about the piece – requests for measurements and construction details.

Upon further conversation, it became clear these were not collectors of fine furniture, but individuals considering the possibility of disassembling the piece for its raw material. Notably, there was no interest in the design, the craftsmanship, or even the leather-upholstered stool that accompanies it.

After 50 years as a furniture maker, I can say this is something I never expected – that a finished piece, built with care and intention, might be viewed primarily for its material yield.

A Different Perspective

Great wood deserves more than to be reduced to its board footage.

This dressing table is not simply a container of rare mahogany – it is a composition, thoughtfully designed to highlight the depth, movement, and natural artistry of a tree that stood for centuries.

Every curve, joint, and surface was created using time-honored methods, intended to endure for generations. It is, in many ways, a collaboration between nature and maker – a piece that allows the story of this remarkable tree to continue in its most complete form.

To take it apart would be to lose something that cannot be reclaimed:
the unity of material, design, and craftsmanship.

Preserving the Legacy of “The Tree”

There may be smaller remnants of this wood still circulating, and I do have a limited number of smaller pieces available.

But this dressing table and stool represent something entirely different.

They are not fragments.

They are a finished expression – arguably one of the most complete and refined ways this extraordinary mahogany has ever been presented.

In Closing

Materials of this caliber come along perhaps once in a lifetime.
The opportunity to experience them as a fully realized work of art is rarer still.

My hope is that this piece finds a home with someone who recognizes its true value – not just in the wood itself, but in what it has become.

A tribute to a 500-year-old tree.
A celebration of craftsmanship.
A legacy preserved.
